JALIBA KUYATEH

 NJAI-KUNDA IN PARIS

JALIBA KUYATEH AND KUMAREH BAND, GAMBIA

no label, 1998

This is one of the tapes made by J. Kuyateh with that band. He has 15 albums altogether issued between 1993 and 2012. He sings and plays the kora with a modern band with brass instruments, bass and drums. The style is reminiscent of Mory Kanté's. You can get some information about his career on Wikipedia.
The sound is perhaps a bit weak but there is a big energy in it.

    1. yes I think so too but it's difficult to get some of his other tapes. Impossible from Discogs for example. Somebody brought it back for me from Africa.

    2. His songs - including a lot of praise-singing - all are quite similar - without a lot of variety. Jaliba Kouyateh is a star in the Gambia; he lives in Brikama. A

  2. "NJAI-KUNDA IN PARIS" means that there was a concert in the house (lit. the compound) of a Njai-family in Paris. Njai is a common family name in Senegal and in the Gambia. So J. K. was probably flown to Paris for a marriage or a baptism. A.
