OUR DEAR LITTLE OLGA IS LIKE A FLOWER
WEDDING SONGS FROM THE LENINGRAD OBLAST

Melodiya, 1981, S20 16721-2

This is another LP from the eighties I copied on tape first then from tape onto CD.
Two ensembles from the region of Leningrad  were recorded : the Folk Ensemble from the village of Rudna district of Slantsveskiy (tracks 1-5) and the Folk Ensemble from the village of Zagriv (same district near the Estonian border) (tracks 6-20).They are both  choirs of women with a local repertoire. Some of the melodies are beautiful and they sing as if they were in their villages and not in a studio.
An exceptional production by Melodiya.

  1. Thanks for posting this wonderful LP! But there is a kind of misunderstanding... Russian folk songs' language is sometimes quite unusual for a modern speaker or learner, and this is a good example. The particle "да" here just means something like "oh", "lo", "wow", and Оленька is a diminutive from Ольга. So the whole sentence reads: "Oh, we have such a flower of our dear (not deer!) Olga". I'm not a great master of English (hehe), and there may (and must!) be a better way of expression, but no deer is meant in any case:) With best wishes from StPetersburg! Sergey.

  2. Thanks very much Sergey for your correction. Yes, I thought that the translation was weird and although I studied Russian fifty years ago I couldn't figure out how to translate. It's very clear now and I'll change the title according to your correction. I'm glad you liked this album.
