THE MUSIC OF GREEK PEASANTS
German musicologist Wolf Dietrich spent many years travelling in balkanic countries such as Albania, Bulgaria, ... But he recorded extensively in Greece. Here again is a panorama of different kinds of music played by traditional musicians in continental Greece mostly and 2 tracks from the islands. You will listen to the kementzes, the zurna, the violin, the clarinet and other country instruments like the karamouza played by Gypsies (track A5) The notes are quite informative with some lyrics in Greek and English. Track B4 is interesting for its love song in Albanian by villagers of the Argolis district. Some parts of Greece were inhabited by Albanians who came there during the 15th century and in some places the albanian language was the only one spoken until at least the end of the 19th century. Now it is very rare and survives in 6 or 7 songs only in Argolis.
These recordings were made between 1969 and 1975 in taverns or musicians' home.
The Anthology of peoples' music was a very good French label which issued other very good albums like this one.
Thank you very much for this diamond!! Great Music!!
