HOLIDAY IN CRETE with ALEKOS KARAVITIS

Minerva, 1977, 22047

 A. Karavitis (1904-1975) was born in the area of Rethymnon in Crete that was still part of the Ottoman empire. He started on the lyra as a child and then moved to Athens when he was 24 years old with his wife. He toured in Germany, Britain, France, Egypt ... with his own band. He became quite famous among Cretan lyra players. This album was released after his death; he performed with a small band  (the Traditional Cretan Group) with one laouto player and two female singers whose names are not mentionned. This is therefore authentic traditional music with the presence of those two singers who give a different sound to what I usually know as Cretan music.

  1. Thank you Herve!! Alekos Karavitis was born in 1904 in the picturesque and mountainous village of Aktouda Rethymno. He was the third child of a large family (eight siblings) and following the family tradition he was involved in music from a very young age. His father Efstratios Karavitis also played the lyre. He acquired his own lyre at the age of 15 in 1919.

"Alekos, first learned the lyre in the high and steep mountain peaks of our village. From a child he had a great passion and love for this instrument", said his older brother with pride.

Karavitis went to Athens for the first time in 1921. Later, he developed into a pioneer of Cretan music while also becoming the artistic director of Dora Stratou. In addition to being a musician, he was also the owner of the first Cretan cafe in Athens. A lyre player with mountain sounds, he made the lyre known in Athens as well and rallied the Cretans of Athens with his lyre in the cafe he kept there since 1927. He died in 1975 at the age of 71.
