ΤΟ ΚΑΣΤΡΟ ΤΗΣ ΘΡΑΚΙΑΣ
THE CASTLE OF THRACE
Kariofyllis Dhoïtsidhis Theopoula and Labriana Dhoïtsdhi
Pan Vox, 1985, SPV 16340
This tape is part of the collection ''Songs and dances from Thrace n°11'' here performed by a group lead by K. Dhoïstidhis who is credited with the entire programme (lyrics and music); of course the repertoire is in fact traditional in its aspect. The Dhoïtsidhis are a well known musical family with Kariofyllis (vocal and outi) and his two daughters (vocals). They come from the village of Karoti near the Turkish border; the whole region lies between Bulgaria and Turkey and is called ''to kastro''. I supposed that the title of this tape and the last song refer to that area.
The instruments used here are clarinet, violin kanun, outi and toubeleki.
He was born in 1930 in Karoti Didymoteicho. He plays oud, sings and composes.
ReplyDeleteIn 1960 he created the Doitsidis Group, a local music and dance group, which participated in events initially in Thrace and then throughout Greece. From 1958 to 1968 - the year he came to Athens - he participated in broadcasts of the EIR Komotini radio station.
He has taken part in international song festivals and artist concerts both in Greece and abroad, while from 1968 to 1973 he gave performances at the "Dora Stratou" theater.
Together with his daughters Theopoulos and Lambriana they have formed a trio that plays and sings Thracian music and have released a total of eighteen personal records, while at the same time they have participated in records of other great artists.
In 1985, the Doitsidis family won, for the eleventh disc in a row entitled The Castle of Thrace, the first Audiovisual Media Award of the French Academy held in Paris.
He has received many awards for his efforts to save the musical culture of Thrace. For this purpose, he maintained from 1980 to 1994 a music venue for the Thracians, the "Thrakiotiko Steki", where only Thracian songs were sung.
